Benjamin’s expertise is shaped by thirty years of leadership as a technology and media executive, award-winning journalist and filmmaker, and Columbia University Punch Sulzberger Fellow (now called the Media Transformation Challenge at Poynter Institute).
Shaped by these experiences, Benjamin's values are deep and simple:
- Action: Learning by doing
- Experimentation: Trying new things
- Honesty: Telling the truth, always
- Equity: Valuing every person
- Authenticity: Walking the talk
- Compassion: Taking care of each other
- Curiosity: Staying open
- Empathy: Know what it is to walk in another’s shoes
In a career spanning print (The Saratogian, Rolling Stone), radio (WCZN-AM, KOTO-FM), broadcast and digital (MTV News), and social (Facebook), Benjamin has accrued a strong record leveraging creative, editorial, operational, and team leadership strength to build brands, sustainable platforms and global programs at scale while accelerating results.
At Facebook, Benjamin led the technology giant's first forays into news, managing curation teams for products like Paper, Trending, and Events. He launched Facebook's first media partnerships center, Facebook Media Central, onboarding public figures across arts and culture, business and technology, and politics and government.
In 2016, he helped launch the Facebook Journalism Project as Global Programs Manager. He spearheaded the ground-up development, launch, and scaling of high-profile in-person, virtual, and on-demand strategic programming around the world against accelerated timelines to strengthen community engagement, product awareness and adoption, and partner sentiment.
As Senior Vice President at MTV News, he led a 100-person team and oversaw a $75M P&L, driving a strategic transformation from a traditional TV newsroom to a 24/7, digital-first, revenue-generating operation. He developed and executed cross-platform strategies that significantly expanded audience reach, increased engagement, and fostered cross-functional collaboration. His leadership accelerated the evolution of MTV News into a dynamic, multiplatform brand positioned for long-term growth.
He initiated a cross-brand strategy integrating MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo TV to streamline resources and boost performance—resulting in triple-digit growth across key web and social metrics in under six months. He also oversaw editorial and production for major news and entertainment coverage, including The Oscars, Grammys, VMAs, MTV Movie Awards, U.S. Elections, and Presidential Inaugurations. His tenure was defined by innovation, impact, and delivering measurable results across platforms.
In 2012, Benjamin independently produced, directed, and wrote the award-winning PBS documentary Mister Rogers & Me exploring the roots and legacy of Fred Rogers’ “deep and simple” values. The documentary premiered at the Paley Center, garnered a New York Times profile, and earned accolades including the Heartland Film Festival’s Best Documentary Feature Award. It was broadcast on more than 200 PBS stations and PBS Video.
Friends & Neighbors, his latest documentary, premiers on PBS in 2026. The film examines how adverse stress reshapes the nervous system and highlights post-pandemic healers and helpers working toward personal and collective recovery.
At every stage of his career, Benjamin’s foundation has remained rooted in local journalism. From covering neighborhood arts, culture, and politics at The Saratogian to news radio in Chester, Pennsylvania, and Telluride, Colorado, he learned early the power of listening deeply, telling stories that matter, and serving communities with integrity.
These formative experiences continue to ground his leadership in national and global roles, shaping his belief that the future of media depends on trust built between neighbors. Whether launching cutting-edge programs at Facebook, reinventing MTV News for the digital age, or documenting small and large acts of deep and simple heroism, Benjamin brings the heart of a local journalist to everything he does — committed to truth, community, and connection.
At every stage of his career, Benjamin has managed and studied change, providing him with an informed and unique perspective on how to help them unlock unrealized potential.
